AXIS

SITE-SPECIFIC DURATIONAL PERFORMANCE

AXIS explores the limits of physical endurance, anatomical stress, and algorithmic prediction through a single, continuous musical action.

Lying in a horizontal posture—an unnatural playing position for the violin — the performer initiates a sustained musical execution maintained strictly until physical collapse. The posture causes rapid physiological stress: blood drains continuously from the arms, producing acute muscle strain, numbness, and severe pain that renders holding the instrument nearly impossible over time.

The project was presented on 13 September 2026 during the residency at Lac o Le Mon Foundation, curated by Cesare Pietroiusti.

Prior to the performance, a predictive AI model analyzed the physical constraints — posture, instrument weight, and muscle fatigue — and calculated a maximum human endurance threshold of 15 minutes.

The performance sustained 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Unfolding from sunset into pitch darkness, AXIS documents the progressive degradation of technique, rhythm, and cognitive focus in a fight between human agency and somatic resistance. As darkness fell and the audience gradually dispersed, the performance concluded only with the involuntary fall of the bow from the strings.

Because the action far exceeded all expectations, the documentation remains incomplete: every recording device ran out of battery before the end, leaving the final moments unrecorded.
